Overview¶
The Land Surface Disturbance (DIST) product suite identifies vegetation and land-cover disturbances caused by natural and anthropogenic events, such as wildfire, deforestation, agricultural conversion, and urban development. DIST supports OPERA’s surface-disturbance mission objective with frequent, analysis-ready disturbance maps derived from optical satellite imagery.
Product level & distribution¶
Processing level: Level-3
DAAC: LP DAAC
Project: NASA OPERA (JPL)
Sub-products¶
DIST-ALERT-HLS — near-real-time vegetation disturbance alerts generated per HLS acquisition.
DIST-ANN-HLS — annual summary of vegetation disturbance aggregated over a calendar year.
Applications¶
Deforestation and forest-degradation monitoring
Wildfire progression and burn-scar mapping
Agricultural expansion and land-use change
Inputs for carbon accounting and biodiversity studies
Inputs¶
Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 (HLS) surface reflectance
Historical land-cover and vegetation reference layers
Coverage¶
Global land coverage, with alert cadence driven by the HLS revisit frequency.
